For those of you who know me, my definition has been shared on numerous occasions. Granted, it is not the “traditional” definition that many people are used to but, after hearing it and processing what it means, its concept is widely applicable to many facets of your life.
So – are you ready for it? Here you go… my definition of success = it’s your endless ability to take crap and keep going! It’s funny… when I tell people this; I usually get a myriad of responses including confusion, laughter, and sometimes the “nod” which means… “Makes sense – I get it – it’s true”.
Allow me to illustrate my point. Let’s say you’re in Sales – what’s your typical day like? Cold call someone – get hung up on. Cold call someone else – no answer, leave a message and never get a call back. Warm call someone – get a meeting… go through the entire process and just when you think you’ll get the order, you get, “I’m sorry… we don’t have the budget right now.” So what do you do? You try again… you call… you pound the pavement… you network like crazy UNTIL it happens… YOU GET AN ORDER! Mission accomplished!
Let’s examine what you went through… all that crap just to get one order! The real lesson here is to man up and keep pushing forward because at some point, despite how many times the “universe” is going to test you, there will be nothing standing between you and your goals. Now, once you have achieved the goal – the process starts over.
So… the next time when you are down and out and think you have nothing left to give – focus on what you want, accept that you will have to take crap to get it, but know, that you will get!
